Interpret Europe Conference in Mechelen, Belgium

As usual, the Interpret Europe conference was a highlight of our year. We always find this diverse gathering of committed, thoughtful and fun heritage professionals immensely rewarding and energising.

This time the conference was in Mechelen, Belgium and had the rather ambitious theme of ‘The Future of Europe’.  Many of us felt this seemed far more challenging now than when it was agreed on just over a year ago.

Peace was one of the ‘threads’ in this theme and Susan was honoured to be asked to run a workshop on the theme of ‘Peace and interpretation’ as part of the pre-conference tour to Tyne Cot, Passchendaele and Ypres.

In practice, it was not too challenging as as the focus was on giving delegates a space to reflect and discuss in preparation for the conference.  Susan’s final workshop on ‘What does interpretation have to do with peace’ was a different matter.  Much more thought and research went into preparing that.  A write up will appear on our blog page and possibly elsewhere in due course.
