We went because this where we are running the site experience workshop on Wednesday but Fremantle Prison (part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Site) is certainly worth a visit. We had a great tour with the Head of Interpretation, Luke Donegan of this evocative, resonate site and were impressed by the thoughtfulness and sensitivity that lies behind the visit experience here. As we have seen at Kilmainham and Cork in Ireland heritage prisons can attract voyeurism and people with a fascination with the grim and gory which is not always consistent with the heritage significance and honouring the memory of people who died and were incarcerated in these places.
Quote of the day: ‘Conservation is to the heritage fabric what interpretation is to heritage values’. Neat- nice one, Luke.
